CHAPTER THREE

“Are you out of your freaking mind?” Trey yelled as his ear plugs were pulled down, startling him. It was never wise to sneak up on a wolf, especially an enforcer. And an enforcer with a power tool was just downright suicidal.

Trey turned, the sudden action making him dizzy for a second. Two nights without sleep were catching up to him. “Shouldn’t you two be off playing Here Comes the Bride with your bestie?”

Trey had watched the spectacle of the impromptu engagement party with narrowed eyes. He’d kept expecting someone to jump out of the forest and yell “surprise.” Or Aria to explain what the hell was going on.

Yeah, he’d run from their bed, but didn’t she owe him some kind of explanation? Had she known what her father had planned? Damn it, had she used him?

“Don’t be snarky, Macho Man.” Leah pulled Michelle forward, forcing Trey to take a step back, and bumping up against one of the young oaks he’d been pruning since dawn. They were at the back of the compound and gave him a good excuse to avoid being inside. Where he might see something he didn’t want to see. Like that big oaf Lyle strutting through camp holding Aria’s hand like he was some kind of damn king.

Or Alpha.

The thought brought him up short. Shit. He’d been so busy trying not to think of Aria in the other man’s bed that he hadn’t realized that if something happened to her father, or he simply decided to step down, Lyle would alpha. His alpha.

Oh hell no. He’d have to leave his pack—his family. He couldn’t live under Lyle’s rule.

We can’t stay and watch our mate with someone else either, butt brain.

He’d given up trying to quiet his wolf. The animal had been pawing and scratching at him since the announcement forty-eight hours ago. He felt like the inside of his chest had been ripped to shreds. Shutting of the chainsaw he held, he laid it down at his feet as he raised a hand to swipe the rivers of sweat pouring down his face. The sun was high and hot and he was probably going to have heat stroke if he didn’t take a break soon.

Stepping back further into the shade of the trees, he motioned for Leah and Michelle to follow. He was surprised they’d sought him out. Even Josh and Gayle had been keeping their distance. He knew it was because he’d been acting like a bear with a sore paw. He’d done a lot of thinking since the big announcement and he’d come to realize that the reason for his anger was his own fault. He’d let the thought of freedom—or at least his idea of what freedom meant—keep him from claiming Aria as he should have done. Now it was too late. He’d lost his mate, his true love, and he’d never felt more trapped.

So much for freedom.

“I take it you two have something you want to say to me.” Trey leaned against a tree trunk, uncaring that the thick bark bit into his naked back.
